FAQs About Group Therapy at Mala
What is group therapy and how is it different from individual therapy?
Group therapy involves a small group of participants led by a licensed therapist who guides structured discussions or activities around shared goals. Unlike individual therapy, group therapy offers peer connection, social learning, and a chance to build skills in a supportive community.
How do I know if my child or teen is a good fit for a therapy group?
Group therapy may be a great fit if your child or teen struggles with social interaction, emotional regulation, anxiety, self-esteem, or identity-related stress. We offer a free consultation to assess fit and make thoughtful recommendations.
Do you offer neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed group therapy?
Yes. Every group at Mala is designed to be trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and culturally sensitive. Our clinicians are trained to support a wide range of neurotypes, identities, and emotional needs with compassion and care.
Will insurance cover group therapy?
In most cases, yes. We accept BCBS, BCN, and Aetna for group therapy sessions. Some groups may also be available for private pay. Our team can verify your benefits and help you understand your coverage before you commit.
How many people are in each group?
Our therapy groups are intentionally kept small—typically 5 to 10 participants—to ensure personalized support, safety, and a sense of community.
What if my child is shy or anxious about joining a group?
That’s completely normal. Our facilitators are experienced in helping children and teens ease into group settings at their own pace. Many participants start out nervous and end up building strong connections and confidence.
What ages do your therapy groups serve?
We offer groups for kids (ages 6+), tweens, teens, and parents. Age ranges vary depending on the group focus—please check individual group pages for details or contact us to explore the best fit.
Do you offer groups during the school year and summer?
Yes! Some groups are seasonal (like our summer Outdoor Adventure Group), while others—such as DBT skills groups—may be ongoing or repeat during the school year. Our Groups Page is updated regularly with current offerings.
