The Clinical Director is a full-time, W-2 leadership position responsible for overseeing complex clinical matters, ensuring the highest standards of ethical, trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and culturally sensitive care. They provide expert guidance on challenging client cases, support licensed providers, and contribute to organizational policy development with a clinical lens.
In alignment with Mala Child and Family Institute’s values of safety, inclusion, collective healing, connection, and learning, the Clinical Director ensures that all care delivery is grounded in best evidence-based practices and adheres to the highest ethical standards. They are responsible for ensuring that ethical principles, including client autonomy, informed consent, confidentiality, and clinician integrity, are integrated into all aspects of clinical care, supervision, and policy development.
This is a hybrid position based out of our Plymouth or Ann Arbor location. The Clinical Director is required to maintain at least 20 direct clinical hours per week, which may include a mix of psychotherapy and assessments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Consultation & Provider Support
Serve as the primary consultant for clinical concerns that fully licensed providers cannot resolve independently, ensuring ethical, effective, and legally compliant interventions.
Uphold ethical decision-making frameworks, ensuring all clinical interventions respect client autonomy, cultural competence, and professional integrity.
Support providers in navigating confidentiality laws, informed consent processes, and ethical dilemmas related to client care.
Assist in managing dual relationships, conflicts of interest, and professional boundaries to maintain the integrity of therapeutic relationships.
Ensure that providers are trained in mandated reporting laws, duty to warn/duty to protect considerations, and appropriate risk assessment strategies.
2. Clinical Policy & Best Practices
Work alongside the Director of DEI to ensure that all clinical policies are trauma-informed, equitable, ethically sound, and inclusive.
Identify gaps in ethical safeguards within service delivery and propose improvements that enhance client care and protect clinician well-being.
Develop and implement policies that reinforce professional ethics, such as avoiding harm, maintaining competence, and respecting diverse worldviews.
Ensure compliance with licensing board regulations, HIPAA, and other relevant federal and state mental health laws.
2. Direct Clinical Work
Maintain a minimum of 20 direct clinical hours per week (psychotherapy, assessments, or a combination).
Deliver high-quality, evidence-based clinical care that aligns with Mala’s mission, values, and professional ethical standards.
Ensure clients are provided with informed consent, a clear understanding of their rights, and full transparency regarding treatment goals.
Maintain clear, accurate, and ethical documentation in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
Work with complex cases requiring advanced expertise in trauma, neurodiversity, and systemic barriers, ensuring all interventions adhere to ethical standards and promote collective healing.
Foster strong therapeutic relationships with clients and families to promote connection and safety while upholding appropriate professional boundaries.
4. Training & Development
Partner with the Training Director to ensure that best practices, professional ethics, and ethical decision-making frameworks are embedded in supervision and clinician development.
Provide ongoing training on ethical considerations, including informed consent, confidentiality, dual relationships, clinical risk management, and cultural humility.
Develop resources that help licensed providers navigate complex ethical issues with confidence.
Stay updated on emerging ethical guidelines and clinical research, ensuring that staff trainingintegrates the latest professional and legal standards.
5. Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Work closely with intake coordinators, the DEI Director, billing managers, and operations teams to ensure that clinical and ethical concerns are addressed holistically.
Ensure intake and administrative policies align with ethical and best clinical practices, reducing barriers to accessible and equitable care.
Represent the clinical perspective in leadership discussions to ensure that organizational decisions prioritize ethical integrity, client well-being, and provider support.
6. Crisis & Escalation Management
Consult on urgent clinical concerns that exceed the scope of intake or non-licensed staff, ensuring ethically sound and legally compliant decision-making.
Ensure that escalation pathways exist for clients needing higher levels of care, prioritizing safety and adherence to ethical risk management frameworks.
Provide guidance on ethical and legal considerations related to clinical risk, including suicidality, duty to warn/protect, child and elder abuse reporting, and involuntary hospitalization procedures.
Monitor clinician burnout and advocate for ethical workload management to ensure providers can maintain high-quality, ethical care.
Qualifications
Fully licensed mental health professional (PhD, PsyD, LCSW, LPC, LMFT).
Minimum 7 years of clinical experience, including work with high-risk populations.
Strong expertise in trauma-informed care, neurodiversity, cultural sensitivity, and family systems,ensuring all interventions align with best evidence-based practices and ethical guidelines.
Experience supporting clinicians in complex case formulation, ethical decision-making, and riskmanagement.
Ability to work collaboratively across departments to improve clinical practices and integrate thelatest research and ethical standards into service delivery.
Experience conducting psychotherapy and assessments, with demonstrated knowledge ofevidence-based and ethically sound modalities.

We are seeking a fully licensed psychotherapist (psychologist, social worker, professional counselor, marriage and family therapist) who specializes in working with children, adolescents, families, or couples for our Ann Arbor clinic. Ideal candidates for this role will have advanced training and experience in child and adolescent therapy, couples/marriage and family counseling, and at least three years of post-licensure psychotherapy experience.
All candidates must be licensed in the State of Michigan and possess strong diagnostic and therapeutic skills across a variety of challenges facing children, adolescents, parents, couples, and families. Strong organizational and clinical documentation skills are essential, with opportunities available for psychological assessment.
Join our team where a full-time clinician typically sees 20-27 clients per week, with up to 20-30% of sessions conducted virtually. Additionally, clinicians spend about 10 hours per week on administrative tasks, continuing education, team meetings, and collateral communication.

We are pleased to announce 2 post-doctoral fellowships for the next academic year, beginning September 2025. We are seeking applicants for both a Child/Adolescent Fellowship for those with a PhD or PsyD from a clinical, counseling, or school psychology program and an Adult Fellowship for those with a PhD or PsyD from a clinical or counseling psychology program.
Will provide developmental assessments and therapy. Fellows may have opportunities to lead/co-lead group therapy sessions. In addition to solidifying knowledge and experience in general clinical practice, fellows may choose to gain more advanced specialization in areas such as trauma/EMDR, early childhood, emotion regulation/DBT, developmental assessment, or evidence based parenting programs.
