The Safe & Sound Protocol

A listening-based therapy for children, teens, and Adults

As part of our comprehensive Occupational Therapy program, Mala Child & Family Institute is proud to offer the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

When the nervous system is in defense mode, everyday sounds — including human voices — can be misinterpreted as threats. This auditory hypersensitivity makes communication and social engagement difficult, and can lead to isolation.

Rooted in Polyvagal Therapy, the Safe and Sound Protocol is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to shift the nervous system from defense to regulation — allowing clients to feel safe and connect better with others. SSP utilizes specially filtered and patented music to gently retune the nervous system, fostering a sense of safety and receptivity.

Who Could Benefit from the Safe and Sound Protocol?

Safe and Sound Protocol has been proven as an effective evidence-based treatment for children, teens, and adults who are:

  • Navigating trauma or PTSD

  • Experiencing anxiety or depression

  • Neurodivergent or have sensory processing differences

  • Presenting with symptoms of chronic stress or burnout

How Does the Safe and Sound Protocol Work?

Built on the Polyvagal Theory, the Safe and Sound Protocol is designed to gently shift auditory processing pattern. Its specially filtered music emphasizes the middle frequencies of the human voice — which is precisely the range our biology recognizes as reassuring and safe.

By repeatedly exposing the nervous system to these “cues of safety,” SSP helps to retrain the ear and brain to interpret sounds more accurately, fostering a state of regulation, connection, and readiness for social engagement.
